Minding Your Dollars and Cents at Chicago Events

A financial education campaign by AARP is continuing through the summer with outreach to Chicago’s African American community.

“The community is experiencing inflation, rebounding from the pandemic and figuring out our new normal from a financial perspective,” says Chartay Robinson, an AARP associate state director for outreach and advocacy for Northern Illinois.

At Gallery Guichard in Bronzeville, the Palm Sunday Concert Series will have

music the third Sunday of July, August and September. AARP, a sponsor, will be on hand to discuss everything from debt to ways to maximize retirement funds.

At several Chicago Sky WNBA games, AARP will share financial resources. AARP will be present July 30, Aug. 8, Aug. 24 and Sept. 8; it’s also sponsoring 30 percent ticket discounts at Sky games at Wintrust Arena. AARP also will partner with a team owner, John Rogers, on Beyond Basketball, a four-week boot camp for small Black-owned businesses.

The campaign will end with “Building Wealth Today for Tomorrow,” a collaboration between AARP and the City of Chicago Treasurer’s Office to be held Oct. 5–6. Details at aarp.org/il.
