Meet the Candidates: Oklahoma Corporation Commission

Posted on 06/20/22 by AARP Oklahoma

Oklahoma's June 28 primaries will feature several tight and closely watched races, including the Republican contest for the party's nomination for a seat on the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Among those running this year are state Sen. Kim David, former pastor, teacher and oil industry worker Harold Spradling and former state Rep. Todd Thomsen.

AARP Oklahoma spoke with the three Republican frontrunners to see where they stand on key issues for older voters in the Sooner State. Here's what they had to say:

Question 1: In 2021, Oklahoma experienced an unusual, but predicted, cold weather event. The fallout from that storm left Oklahomans holding the bag for over $5 billion in costs incurred in a matter of hours, due to purchasing off the high-priced gas spot market. If elected, what will you do to prevent something like this from happening again?

Question 2: What will your approach be for determining if a requested rate increase is justified, and what factors will you consider in your decision-making process?

Question 3: We continue to see efforts to build new power plants, invest in alternative energy and shore up the utility grid. How will you approach the cost investments needed for these projects to ensure fairness for rate payers.
