Iowa Voters Can Help Protect Social Security

Keeping Social Security financially solvent will be AARP Iowa’s top voter engagement issue this year—leading up to the 2024 presidential caucuses.

Signed into law in 1935, Social Security regularly keeps Americans out of poverty. In Iowa, more than 663,000 people received Social Security benefits in 2020—injecting $11.4 billion into the state’s economy, according to AARP research.

However, without changes to the program, the Social Security trust funds could run short of money by 2035, according to the 2022 annual report of the Social Security Board of Trustees. That’s why AARP Iowa is educating Iowans about the importance of protecting Social Security for current and future generations. Those who pay into the program should not be denied the benefits they’ve earned.

AARP will also mobilize voters from across the political spectrum to educate their fellow Iowa residents, as well as 2024 presidential candidates, about this crucial issue.
