First of Four Open Streets Events Kicks Off in May
A livable community is a place where people of all ages and abilities are able to enjoy a quality of life enhanced by vibrant public spaces, opportunities for social connection, safe places to walk and bike and more.
Open Streets events are a way to show how a community can reimagine public spaces like a street when it is closed to vehicles and opened up for pedestrians.
This summer, each First Friday will feature a different Open Streets event, and AARP South Dakota is proud to be collaborating with Downtown Sioux Falls and the City of Sioux Falls for these events.
We kick off the series with the May Art & Wine Walk on Friday, May 2, from 5-8 p.m. The event is free and open to all ages.
Phillips Avenue will be closed (starting at 4 p.m.) between 9th and 10th Streets...transforming the area into a pedestrian-friendly space. This initiative enhances walkability and fosters a vibrant community atmosphere, making it easier for attendees to navigate the event and enjoy the festivities safely.
Stroll through the heart of the city as you explore various venues showcasing a diverse array of artworks, from paintings and sculptures to photography and mixed media. Many locations will feature live demonstrations, allowing you to witness the creative process firsthand.
For wine enthusiasts, sampling punch cards will be available for purchase, granting access to a curated selection of wines at participating venues. Each location will offer unique wine tastings, providing an opportunity to discover new favorites while appreciating the local art scene.
Highlights:
- Live Art Demonstrations: Interact with artists as they create masterpieces in real-time.
- Street Performances: Enjoy live music and entertainment throughout the evening.
- Local Businesses: Support downtown retailers, galleries, and eateries, many of which will have extended hours and special offers for attendees.
Volunteer Opportunities with Downtown Sioux Falls: Various roles are available, from assisting with event setup to helping with wine sampling stations. For more information and to sign up, visit the volunteer page.
