AARP developed this family caregiver guide with you, the caregiver, in mind and as a starting point to help you find the services and support you might need throughout your journey.

Ohio Department of Administrative Services (614-466-2000; 800-221-6327)
Provides resources, support and benefits for state employees who are caring for an adult so they can balance their role as a caregiver and in the workplace.

Golden Buckeye Card Program (800-266-4346)
Free program for residents 60+ and adults age 18-59 with disabilities offers cardholders special savings such as discounts, waived fees, free products or services and more.

Ohio Department of Job & Family Services
Provides information on obtaining employment services, unemployment benefits, cash and protective services, food assistance and fraud protection.

Senior Community Service Employment Program (866-243-5678; 800-266-4346)
Offers low-income adults 55+ training for various positions.

Pro Seniors, Inc. (513-345-4160)
Provides free legal and long-term care help to older adults.

Disability Rights Ohio (614-466-7264)
Assists family caregivers who are caring for a loved one with disabilities and advocates for human, civil and legal rights, especially if a caregiver believes the care recipient’s rights have been violated because of a disability.

Adult Protective Services (855-644-6277)
Provides information and investigates allegations of abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults.

Ohio Department of Medicaid (800-324-8680)
Offers in-home services for individuals with disabilities and chronic conditions.

Ohio Department of Health (614-466-3543)
Helps to ensure quality health care and services for care recipients.

Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (800-686-1578)
Provides one-on-one counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families. The agency can help with understanding health care options, obtaining benefits and filing claims.

Long-Term Care Ombudsman (800-282-1206)
Assists caregivers with loved ones in assisted living facilities and/or nursing homes. Works to resolve complaints about services, help caregivers select a provider and offers information about benefits and consumer rights.

Ohio Department of Health — Home Health Agencies (614-995-7466)
In-home services to patients include skilled nursing, homemaking and therapeutic services.

Provides information about senior housing, adult care and estate planning resources.

Area Agencies on Aging (866-243-5678)
Coordinate services for older adults and people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. Agencies provide access to caregiver resources, nutrition and dietary counseling, home- and community- based long-term care planning and services, and programs that assist with home heating/cooling costs, maintenance and repairs/modifications.

Ohio Department of Aging (800-266-4346)
Provides home- and community- based services and support for older adults and their caregivers. Services include information and referral, nursing home functional eligibility assessments, caregiver programs and information, home-delivered and congregate meals, and health insurance counseling.

Department of Health Hospice Programs (614-995-7466)
Provides information about hospice care programs with a focus on palliative care and addresses the physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient as well as the psychosocial needs of the patient’s family/caregiver.

Ohio’s Hospice (800-653-4490)
Provides hospice and palliative care to patients in hospice houses, patient homes, hospitals, in-patient facilities and extended care and assisted living facilities. Also offers caregiver support and respite care.
