Do You Qualify for This Tax Break?

Posted on 12/31/23 by The AARP Bulletin

A new law exempts all Missouri residents from paying state personal income tax on Social Security and some public pension benefits.

Previously, single residents with an adjusted gross income of over $85,000 a year, or married couples who made more than $100,000, had to pay taxes on their benefits. The exemption—which AARP Missouri advocated for—eliminates those income limits.

The law also allows counties to vote on whether property owners eligible for Social Security retirement benefits may be exempted from future property tax bill increases.
