AARP CA is currently accepting applications for new Executive Council Members to serve two-year terms, with the opportunity to serve three consecutive terms. To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to caaarp@aarp.org.

The Executive Council helps to advance AARP’s mission through the California state office’s social impact agenda, provides strategic insights and leadership, and represents AARP CA when appropriate.

AARP is committed to maintaining an Executive Council that is representative of the state’s diversity and perspectives of different generations.

An Ideal Candidate:

  • Is an experienced and effective leader
  • Respects and embraces diversity and inclusion
  • Is able to provide strategic guidance to AARP CA leadership and collaborate closely with staff partners and other volunteer leaders
  • Is a subject matter expert in at least one of these issues:
    • Livable communities
    • Housing
    • Transportation
    • Financial security and fraud
    • Caregiving
    • Workforce

REQUIREMENTS

Term of Service:

  • Two years with option to renew twice, not to exceed six years.

Training:

  • Orientation to AARP.
  • Other skills training and issue briefings as necessary.
  • Opportunities to develop knowledge on AARP issues of interest.

Travel Required:

  • Some travel as necessary throughout the state, or to meetings or trainings out of state.
  • Travel and other expenses are reimbursed.

Time Commitment:

  • Monthly conference calls.
  • Two in-person meetings per year.
  • Other commitments depend on areas of individual interests and may include strategic planning sessions, partner meetings, and media interviews.
  • Web-based technology is available for meetings and trainings.

Supervisor:

  • Works under the direction of the State President.
  • The State President and the Executive Council have no fiduciary or voting responsibilities.

Available Resources:

  • AARP provides volunteer travel accident insurance and commercial general liability insurance while performing volunteer responsibilities.
  • Travel expenses are reimbursed in accordance with existing AARP policies.

AARP California is the largest of AARP’s 53 state and territorial offices, representing 3.2 million members with office locations in Pasadena, San Jose, and Sacramento, as well as staff and volunteers supporting the San Diego Information Center. Thirty staff and more than 2,800 volunteers across the state serve AARP California members through advocacy, community engagement, as well as state and local programming.
