AARP Massachusetts is seeking an inspiring leader to join our team as Volunteer State President to begin on January 1st, 2025. This person will be familiar with AARP, passionate about our mission serving the needs of Massachusetts’ aging population.

We are looking for a seasoned persuasive and motivational public speaker who is interested in working in partnership with the State Director, Executive Council, volunteers and AARP Massachusetts staff to improve lives. Knowledge of Massachusetts government and the Legislative process, issues impacting the aging population, and contacts in the business community a plus.

Job Description
In partnership with the State Director and in collaboration with lead volunteers and staff, the State President helps position AARP Massachusetts to achieve AARP’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities. The State President actively supports volunteers, serves as a key spokesperson on AARP’s national and state issues, and supports the development and execution of State priorities. The State President is governed by the policies and procedures of the Association.

Key Resonsibilities

  • Proactively engage, support, and recruit volunteers.
  • Work in strong partnership with the State Director to provide vision and ensure a cohesive leadership team with clear communication.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of the state demographics, organizational structures, political environment, and key players.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to engage diverse populations in all activities across the state.
  • Work in partnership with the State Director and the Executive Council, supporting state strategic planning, promoting AARP activities, and building networks and community partnerships across the state to further AARP goals
  • Chair the state Executive Council and serve as an AARP volunteer spokesperson in the state.
  • Inform the Regional Volunteer Director of activities on a regular basis.
  • Support and abides by AARP policies, including political activity guidelines that protect the Association's non-partisan status. As a Designated volunteer, the State President is asked to abide by AARP's higher level of political activity policy.
  • Work with the AARP National Team and State Presidents from around the country to collaborate on furthering the mission of AARP.

Qualifications

  • AARP membership is required, including a demonstrated personal commitment and passion for the mission, vision, values, and priorities of AARP.
  • Professional history of strategic thinking and planning skills, and an ability to navigate complex, challenging issues.
  • Possesses a strong leadership presence and ability to build and sustain influence with stakeholders, the public, volunteers and the greater AARP Community.
  • Ability to engage and work well with staff, volunteers, and diverse populations.
  • Experience in and an understanding of group dynamics and meeting facilitation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to connect with a wide range of audiences.
  • Must be willing to testify in before the Massachusetts Legislature and other appropriate governmental bodies on policy or regulatory matters.
  • Travel is required several times per year, including travel to the National Office in Washington, DC.
  • Must be a year-round Massachusetts resident.
  • The ideal candidate can give sufficient time, capacity, and flexibility to serve in this role.

Training

  • Orientation to AARP
  • Other skills training and issue briefings as necessary
  • Assigned trainings as requested by AARP including, but not limited to, Ethics, and Workplace Safety
