Each year when the Virginia General Assembly convenes, legislators introduce, debate, and vote on hundreds of bills that will impact the lives and livelihoods of everyone across the Commonwealth.

AARP Virginia volunteer advocates work throughout the General Assembly session contacting legislators, testifying in committees, writing letters to the editors of their local papers and monitoring bills through the legislative process.

Last week, the volunteer advocacy team gathered in Richmond for our annual lobby week. Volunteers spent the first day at the General Assembly lobbying legislators to pass bills aimed at helping people age 50-plus and their families. For the second day of legislator meetings, volunteers teamed up with our coalition partners to discuss the proposed Prescription Drug Affordability Board.

Volunteers met with legislators to discuss proposed bills relating to Medicaid, nursing home reforms and prescription drug costs.
