As we mark the 89th anniversary of Social Security, it’s a good time to reflect on its profound impact on American society since its creation in 1935. Signed into law during the Great Depression, Social Security emerged as a foundation of hope and stability for millions of Americans facing economic uncertainty. Today, over 65 million Americans receive the money they've earned over a lifetime of hard work.
In the fabric of society, few programs have woven themselves as deeply into the American culture as Social Security. The economic devastation of the Great Depression further exposed society's vulnerabilities, with millions of older Americans in poverty and many more at risk of financial ruin. In response, the Social Security Act was signed into law to better ensure a measure of income security for older Americans in retirement.
Vermont lawmakers and advocates worked tirelessly to address the many challenges facing our communities.

Vermonters Need a Strong Paid Family & Medical Leave Program
The financial and emotional strain of unpaid family caregiving is pressing down hard on many Vermont residents, according to new research released today by AARP Vermont. The study finds that Vermont family caregivers often struggle to provide timely quality care to their loved ones without sacrificing their own health and financial security. The research also shows strong support for a paid family and medical leave program across political parties and income levels in Vermont.

The last several years have shown us the importance of being prepared for an uncertain future, and that includes having savings to depend on. Unfortunately, thousands of Vermonters who work for themselves or small businesses have no retirement benefits at work. The truth is that many small businesses want to be able to provide a workplace retirement savings option, but can’t because of how expensive and time consuming it is.
