AARP North Carolina appoints David Sevier as State President

RALEIGH — Longtime AARP volunteer David Sevier of Greensboro was appointed as the new AARP North Carolina State President. As President, Sevier is a lead volunteer who helps shape state and local programs and policy agendas for 1.1 million AARP members in the state.

Sevier has an extensive background in both health care policy and veterans affairs. Throughout a successful US Navy career, David developed health policy for the Secretary of Defense and the US Congress. In the mid-90s, he led the Defense Health Resources Study Center which created the US military's health system, TRICARE, - a $15B healthcare system serving over 9 million service members, retirees, and their families, worldwide.

Following his Navy career, David established a US State Department program to assist developing countries in their national health systems, and then managed international programs for the non-profit organization, Mercy Ships.

Sevier subsequently created a Washington, DC “think tank,” the US Medicine Institute, which conducted national policy research and recommended changes to federal health programs. He also established a Commission to set a long-term healthcare plan for the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

He also was a co-founder of the North Carolina Serious Illness Coalition, a group of over 100 organizations that came together to promote the findings of a North Carolina Institute of Medicine report on improving serious illness care.

AARP State Director Michael Olender said, "Sevier's extensive knowledge and desire to help others will be a big benefit not only to the state's nearly 620,000 veterans, but to family caregivers who are looking for some support when it comes to caring for loved ones."

Sevier currently co-leads a consulting firm which assisted AARP’s Veterans and Military Families (VMF) program for many years.
