AARP MI Statement on U.S. Senate Campaign Ad

Posted on 08/14/24 by Careena Eggleston

LANSING, MI—AARP Michigan State Director Paula D. Cunningham issued the following statement regarding the currently running political ad for a U.S. Senate candidate. The ad features former AARP Michigan state volunteer leader Eric Schneidewind.

“We are alarmed and concerned that the recently released campaign ad for
a U.S. Senate candidate includes a reference to AARP in its messaging. While that reference is used only in connection with the speaker’s previous volunteer affiliation with AARP, its inclusion implies our endorsement of the candidate, which is incorrect and misleading. At no point did AARP participate in its production.

“In fact, when AARP’s name is misused by a campaign, we ask that it be taken down. AARP never endorses or gives money to candidates. Ever. Nor do we direct candidates, parties or PACs to use our name in ads, fundraising emails or other campaign efforts. Our non-partisan status matters to us, and it matters to our members.

“We are often asked what role AARP plays in elections. It’s simple: We focus on ensuring every candidate from both parties is aware of the issues that matter to people – including protecting Social Security and Medicare, lowering the price of prescription drugs and helping ensure health and financial security for all of us. We do this work by sponsoring debates and candidate forums and offering information on major races. Additionally, we work to ensure voters have the resources to vote safely, whether from home or in person.

“Advocating for all Americans age 50-plus has been at the core of AARP’s mission since our founding in 1958. It's a big part of what we do every day.”
