AARP in San Jose is here locally to help you take on 2023 with virtual and in-person events, local resources, information and more.


LOCAL VIRTUAL EVENTS:

San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2023 + Sweepstakes (August 11 – 13)

AARP believes in the power of music and dancing to support the fitness of both your brain and your body! That is why we are proud to sponsor San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2023 and offer YOU a chance to attend with a guest. This is Silicon Valley's premier annual music event, that takes place in and around Plaza de César Chavez Park in downtown San Jose, California. Renowned as one of North America's foremost music events with its dynamic three-day programming, San Jose Jazz presents a thrilling artist lineup for one of the summer's major San Francisco Bay Area outdoor music festivals. Enter AARP's sweepstakes for a chance to win two All Stages 3-Day Passes to Summer Fest 2023 HERE. The deadline to enter is 11:59pm, August 4, 2023 and winners will be notified on August 5, 2023.



Family Caregiving & Loneliness (August 11 @ Noon PT)

Providing care for a family member or loved one can be time demanding, and often takes a toll on one’s social life. As a result, many caregivers experience loneliness, which can lead to depression and other physical and emotional challenges. Join AARP California as we talk with Christina Irving, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Client Services Director at Family Caregiver Alliance, as well as experienced family caregivers, Jenn Chan and Lily Liu about caregiving journeys and tips for managing social isolation and loneliness. Film Screening & Discussion: Boys of Summer – A Caregiving Journey (August 17 @ 1 p.m. PT)

Join us for a free, virtual screening of the documentary Boys of Summer: Short Stop by Dr. Robert Cochrane. Boys of Summer: Short Stop chronicles Robert and his father’s journey with Parkinson’s disease and how they used the power of baseball to connect. Following the virtual showing of the film, you will have an opportunity to ask Robert questions and hear from an AARP representative to learn more about available caregiving resources and tools. Let’s Take it Outside with East Bay Regional Park District (August 23 @ 11 a.m. PT)

Join AARP California for a presentation by the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD). Learn about the parks, trails, events and more that they manage and host in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties! Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions. The East Bay Regional Park District maintains and operates a system of beautiful parklands in Alameda and Contra Costa counties to the east of San Francisco. The system comprises 73 parks spanning across 125,000 acres; 1,250 miles of trails; 55 miles of shoreline. Learn more and register HERE. This virtual event is free and open to the public. This event is part of AARP California’s Let’s Take it Outside™ series that allows participants to learn about and explore various outdoor public places and spaces.



Senior Safari: Enjoy a Day at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (August 24 @ 9 a.m. PT) 

Join AARP California for Happy Hollow Park & Zoo’s Senior Safari series and enjoy a day at the zoo. This program is designed to help older adults improve their health, avoid social isolation, and enjoy a unique environment that stimulates both mind and body. Senior Safari admission and parking are free for those ages 50-plus that arrive before 10 a.m. PT (the park opens to seniors at 9 a.m. PT), and guests are welcome to stay for the day after gates open to the public. Silicon Valley Pride Festival (August 27 @ Noon PT)

Join us for Silicon Valley Pride, also known as San Jose Pride, an annual LGBTQ+ pride celebration that will take place in Downtown San Jose. Enjoy live music, food, vendors and more! We also invite you to stop by our booth at the festival on Sunday, August 27th to learn about our work to protect Social Security and play our giant Plinko board to win prizes (while supplies lasts). AARP Andrus Award for Community Service (Nomination Period Closes August 18)

Do you know an extraordinary volunteer age 50 or older who deserves recognition? AARP California is seeking nominations for the 2023 Andrus Award for Community Service. This is the association's most prestigious volunteer award that recognizes outstanding individuals who are sharing their experience, talents, and skills to enrich the lives of others. It is presented annually to a California volunteer, age 50 or older, that embodies the principles of AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who believed in the power of ordinary people to do extraordinary things. California’s 2023 Andrus Award for Community Service recipient will be presented with the award and a $1,000 check made out to the non-profit of their choice. Review the eligibility guidelines and submit your online nomination HERE. The deadline for the California Andrus Awards for Community Service nominations is August 18, 2023.
