AARP DC Survey Aims to Promote Health Equity

AARP District of Columbia wants to hear from Black residents 40 and older about their experiences accessing health care in the district.

AARP DC will use the information to promote equitable health care for all. The online questionnaire is confidential and will close at the end of May.

A 2021 AARP DC report, done in collaboration with Georgetown University’s Department of Health Systems Administration, found significant health disparities between DC’s Black and white residents age 50 and up.

Treatment rates among older Black adults for heart failure, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma were two times higher than among their white counterparts. For diabetes, it was three times higher.

The study found similar disparities in the incidence of prostate and lung cancers. Black residents also have higher rates of preventable hospitalizations.
