2024 Election Guide for Independent/Nonaffiliated Voters
Independent/nonaffiliated voters are able to participate in Arizona’s 2024 election cycle, including the State Primary and Presidential Preference Elections. Learn more about how to navigate the election below.
Presidential Preference Election (PPE)
Important Dates:
- Election Day: March 19
- Voter Registration Deadline: February 20
- Early Voting: February 21 – March 15
- By-Mail Ballot Request Deadline: March 8
Party Affiliation Requirement:
Independent voters must change their voter registration to a specific party to participate in the PPE, as open primaries do not apply to this election. Party affiliation can be changed back to independent/nonaffiliated for the State Primary and General Elections in August and November, respectively, after the March Presidential Preference Election. Primary Election
Important Dates:
- Election Day: July 30
- Voter Registration Deadline: July 1
- Early Voting: July 3 – July 26
- By-Mail Ballot Request Deadline: July 19
Open Primary Provision:
Arizona allows independent voters to participate in primary elections.
How to Participate:
Independent voters must specify on which party's ballot they wish to vote. This can be done by contacting the County Recorder's Office for a mail ballot or by informing a poll worker at an early voting location or on Election Day.
General Election
Important Dates:
- Election Day: November 5
- Voter Registration Deadline: October 7
- Early Voting: October 9 - November 1
- By-Mail Ballot Request Deadline: October 25
Procedure for Independent Voters:
No special procedure is required for independent voters in general elections.
Voter Registration
Online:
Use the Service Arizona Voter Registration Portal. You must have an Arizona driver's license or ID card issued by the Motor Vehicle Division.
By mail:
Print out a registration form online or request one by mail from your county recorder's office. After completing the form, mail it back to your county recorder.
In person:
Visit your county recorder’s office to pick up a registration form. You can also register at a Motor Vehicle Division office, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, armed forces recruiting centers, and select state public assistance and disability agencies.
