The film focuses on Colonel George Picquart, a French army officer who uncovers a conspiracy after the wrongful conviction of a young Jewish Captain for treason - as a result of antisemitism. Dreyfus' persecution on Devil's Island led to Émile Zola famously intervening writing an open letter "J'Accuse...!" which galvanized public opinion surrounding the innocence of Dreyfus.
