About the Event
In 1849, John Robertson Maben traveled to California in search of gold. Join Maben on the journey via a series of 13 letters he sent to his wife, Sarah, describing his travels. He wrote of the cholera epidemic of 1849, the great St. Louis fire that same year, and the excitement and brutality of the California gold fields.
Presenter Cece D'Arville is the education coordinator at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. She is passionate about history and helping people understand how landscapes and public art shape historic narratives.
