We’ll explore new research on the financial health of older Black and white Ohioans.
About the Event
Join us to learn about new research that AARP Ohio commissioned in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University on racial and economic disparities among older adults in the state.
The study, which illuminates trends relevant well beyond Ohio’s borders, shows startling gaps between the financial well-being of older Black residents and their white counterparts that are likely due to inequities entrenched over generations. Among the study’s key findings:
- Black residents 50-plus were nearly twice as likely as their white peers to say they were not prepared for retirement.
- Older Black Ohioans were three times more likely to say they were “finding it difficult to get by,” with one woman noting, “I’m working two jobs as a person that is way past the retirement age.”
- Nationally, Black families have only about 15 percent of the median wealth of white families, and the wealth gap widens with age.
